It may be because both are already acknowledged gays, but it would have given more depth to the story if more is revealed about both men's background. They do not form a straight line. This is a difficult book for me to review because I adored Ashley's first book Love Script and have looked forward to reading more from her. We've checked it out from our library so often that I felt guilty and bought our own copy. Eventually, the pressures drove him out of the movement and into exile in Tanzania, but while he was an activist he represented what was finest in the civil rights movement. There are books that I would like to use that designation but I can't, so I have to write a nuanced-enough 3-star review to state that the book is "okay".
